REDLED toward an industrial innovation

Descriptive of REDLED project :

The development of lighting systems using Light Emitting Diodes (LED) allows a significant reduction in energy consumption for lighting in buildings, towns or in transport. LEDs already represented 43% of the lamps put on the lighting market in 2015, which represents a stunning 55 million units. Considering that the expected lifetime of LED is around 8 years, recycling will become of strategic importance in the coming years.

Today, there is no technical solution for recycling LED. However, these lamps contain a great variability of strategic materials and metals which could then be used as secondary resources for circular economy in Europe. The aim of this project is to upscale a technology to recycle end-of-life LED products. This project will then contribute to the raw materials supply of the Europe industry and to the reduction of costs and impacts associated with waste disposal.

The REDLED project provides an opportunity for Europe to be leader LEDs already represented 43% of lamps put on the lighting market in 2015, which represents a stunning 55 million units.
