Évaluation du comportement structurel des Cathédrales gothiques : méthodes constructives, contrebutements et gain de hauteur sous voûtes - Evaluation of the Structural Behavior of Gothic Cathedrals: Construction Methods, Buttressing, and Height Gain under Vaults.

Contexte, sujet de thèse

Ce travail de thèse s’inscrit dans le projet ANR ALTIOR qui débute en octobre 2023. Il s’effectuera au sein du laboratoire I2M de Bordeaux, département GCE en collaboration avec le laboratoire LMGC de Montpellier. Le projet ALTIOR, intitulé « Les voûtes de Notre-Dame de Paris et la quête de la hauteur dans l’architecture gothique en France, XIIe-XIIIe siècles » a pour objectif d’expliquer les procédés techniques et architecturaux qui ont rendu possible cette incroyable conquête de la hauteur sous voûtes dans l’architecture gothique aux XIIe et XIIIe siècles. Ce projet multipartenaire s’inscrit dans le cadre du chantier scientifique CNRS - Ministère de la Culture Notre-Dame. La compréhension des méthodes constructives ayant conduit à une élévation de la hauteur des voûtes des cathédrales gothiques convoquera sciences humaines et sociales (histoire de l’architecture, archéologie du bâti, archéométrie) et sciences pour l’ingénieur (sciences des matériaux, géophysique, génie civil, calcul de structure) en s’appuyant notamment sur une modélisation numérique performante des structures étudiées, basée sur les approches discrète (bloc à bloc) et/ou continue de la maçonnerie..

Context, thesis subject

This thesis work is part of the ANR ALTIOR project, which starts in October 2023. It will be conducted at the I2M laboratory in Bordeaux, GCE department, in collaboration with the LMGC laboratory in Montpellier. The ALTIOR project, entitled "The vaults of Notre-Dame de Paris and the quest for height in gothic architecture in France, 12th-13th centuries," aims to explain the technical and architectural processes that made possible this incredible conquest of height under vaults in Gothic architecture during the 12th and 13th centuries. This multi-partner project is part of the CNRS - Ministry of Culture Notre-Dame scientific program.
Understanding the construction methods that led to an increase in the height of Gothic cathedral vaults will involve humanities and social sciences (history of architecture, built heritage archaeology, archaeometry) as well as engineering sciences (materials science, geophysics, civil engineering, structural analysis), relying in particular on advanced numerical modeling of the studied structures based on the discrete and/or continuous mechanical approaches.
